Deacons Information

The original Greek for the word deacon is diakonos, which simply translated means “to serve”. This perfectly sums up what we do. Some of the ways we serve include helping plant flowers around the church, donating money to disaster relief, and sponsoring the Angel Tree which provides Christmas gifts for local kids.

Something new we are trying is the Deacon’s Athletic Fund. This fund will help local families pay for the cost of organized athletics. Numerous studies have shown that kids who are members of a sports team are far less likely to use drugs, engage in premarital sex, or become overweight, which leads to a myriad of health problems later in life. In short, young people who participate in sports are healthier and happier, and go on to lead more successful and fulfilling llives.

The funds for this ministry, and all the ministries that the deacons are involved in come exclusively from our fundraising dinners. So the next time you see an announcement for a deacon’s dinner, know that you are not only getting a good meal for the money, but also you are helping to serve the community as well.

As we read Christ’s words in Luke 22:27 “For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as someone who serves” we realize that serving others is not just something that deacons do, it is what true followers of Christ do as well.
