Be Kind Anyway

8 ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9 ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The journey that we have been on on Sunday mornings has been a real challenge.

I have been walking with Jesus since I was 17 years old.  I have gone so very far, and have miles to go in coming to be like Christ.  In fact, I am not sure we can actually complete the journey here on this earth.

One area that I have had difficulty with just recently is just what Jesus spoke about in these verses.  Please let me explain.

In the later listing of the Beatitudes, Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart."  I do believe God purifies us, and continues to purify us.  It is not a one-shot deal.  He sanctifies us for his purpose, and then continues to sanctify us and purify us.  This proces is never really finished.  But I do believe that the pure in heart, and those being made pure in heart, will see God; not just in the future in Heaven, but they will see God in the here and now.  They will find God in every facet of life.  I know people like this, and I want to be more like that.

One are, though, for me has been in the area of how I react when people "revile" me for no apparent reason or purpose.  Jesus said, "Blessed are the PEACEMAKERS" and "Blessed are the persecuted".  Sometimes, people will say things about you, untrue things, for not real reason.  As a pastor, I have never understood why someone would do that.  But, Jesus said that we are blessed if we encounter people like that.

What should our reaction be to people who enjoy saying false things about us?  Mother Teresa had it the following...

(hung in the home in Calcutta that Mother Teresa had…)

This version is accredited to Mother Teresa

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;

Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;

Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;

Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;

Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;

It was never between you and them anyway.

AMEN...enough said...

Easy to quote, but not so easy to live.  That's why I call on the Lord every day.  Without Him in my life, forgiveness and love are impossible.  Let's pray for each other that we might live this out...

It has been my blessing to serve you these past couple of years.  In the search for new leadership, the church is coming to a discerned decision.  I am thrilled for the future of Crafton UP.  My last Sunday with you is May 14, according to a decision by the session.  I will keep all of you in my prayers.

In Christ's Peace,

Pastor Ron
